I refer to these pieces as “effigies” rather than “dolls” because they are not meant to be played with. They are objects created for remembrance. Each effigy is hand sewn and hand sculpted. The heads are white or black stoneware and were hand painted and sgraffito. The bodies are filled with rice and cotton filling so they may sit and have weight to them. The clothes are all hand sewn mostly by hand and decorated with vintage thread, lace, and buttons from my Grandmother’s sewing box. Some of the pieces have crochet clothes. All effigies are about 16 1/2 inches in Length.
